One of the most dynamic entrepreneurs of the 21st century, Elon Musk brings to life startups that are transforming industries through dramatic inventions and visions. Born in South Africa in 1971, the story of the transformation from a curious boy to the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and other pioneering ventures is nothing but extraordinary. He has made electric cars possible with Tesla, advancing private space exploration with SpaceX, and rewriting social media by taking over Twitter, now known as X.
It is because of what he says is the fact that he believes he is trying to solve some of humanity’s biggest challenges: climate change through clean energy and expanded access to space travel. His work has radically redefined transportation and energy, setting global debates over the future of technology and life beyond Earth. More than at any other time during the past century, Musk’s career-from PayPal taking $20 million in venture capital on a whim and selling it for $1.5 billion, to risking an entire fortune to fund SpaceX-meets the textbook definition of bold risks and an unmatched ability to translate vision into reality.
Musk was born in 1971 in South Africa. He is the oldest of three children. His mother was a model and a nutritionist, while his father was an engineer. Musk was a withdrawn child, mostly seen reading books and working on computers. He created a video game when he was 12 years old and sold it to a computer magazine. Musk emigrated to Canada at age 17 after facing that to avoid the military. Later, he immigrated to the United States to study economics and physics at the University of Pennsylvania and obtained his Bachelor of Science degree.
In 1995, Musk left the PhD program at Stanford University and entered the business world. Zip2 was an online directory of businesses that he co-founded and sold for $307 million in 1999. Then came X.com, which eventually became PayPal. In 2002, eBay snapped up PayPal for $1.5 billion, and Musk pocketed $165 million from the sale.
He is probably best known for Tesla, an electric car company and SpaceX, a company he founded in 2002. It designs rockets and spacecraft and wants to make travel into outer space relatively cheap. Musk also strives through SolarCity, which he founded with two cousins in 2006, to develop solar energy solutions. Tesla acquired it recently.
Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion in 2022, then renamed the company “X,” and that is now valued at $8 billion compared to what it was bought at. Also, Musk is the CEO of xAI that focuses on artificial intelligence.
Despite the setbacks he encounters, Musk has become one with his ideas and risks, solving big problems-whether climate change or space exploration making a name for himself and companies that break frontiers for some of the most exciting technological developments for our times.
