Australia is gearing up for its national elections, and both the major political parties are making plans for tighter immigration rules. These new rules could have a direct impact on international students, particularly those from India, who constitute one of the largest student populations in Australia.

The present government is interested in cutting the number of international students entering the country. The opposition party also favors curbing the number of student visas. They are also connecting the increase in student numbers to issues such as a shortage of housing and increased costs.

Australia recently hiked the student visa fee to 1,600 Australian dollars from 710 Australian dollars. This could be raised to 2,000 dollars soon. There are also proposals to limit the number of international students to 270,000 annually. These policies are leading to uncertainty for students who wish to pursue studies in Australia.

Students who wish to work in Australia upon completion of their studies, particularly in industries such as IT, engineering, and nursing, might find it more difficult to obtain permanent residence if regulations continue to shift during their program.

There were approximately 853,000 overseas students in Australia in 2024, up 9% from the prior year. Indian students comprised the second-largest demographic, following Chinese students.

The reforms are part of a broader national debate regarding migration, housing, and infrastructure. With more individuals migrating to cities, there are fears of congested facilities and increased living expenses. Some politicians feel that cutting the number of international students will address these problems.

Despite these new regulations being in the pipeline, demand to study in Australia continues to be strong. Students are still applying in large numbers, and demand for student accommodation remains strong, particularly in major cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

But the situation is still unclear. The ultimate result of the elections will have a significant impact on Australia’s education and visa policies. Students intending to pursue their studies in Australia will need to keep a close eye on making their decisions depending on the new regulations.

If more stringent visa policies are implemented, most foreign students will begin searching for other nations to pursue their studies. The coming months will be crucial for those who aspire to shape their future in Australia.
