xAI, the AI firm established by Elon Musk, raised $6 billion in its new round of funding. The total funds raised by the company reached $12 billion after the earlier $6 billion raised in May.

In this round of funding, significant investors participated, such as Andreessen Horowitz, Blackrock, Fidelity, Sequoia Capital, and Nvidia. Of interest is that Saudi conglomerate Kingdom Holdings had invested $400 million in this funding round. This gives xAI a valuation of almost double its previous value with new funding, which amounts to $45 billion.

Musk launched AIl in 2023 and the company’s flagship AI model, Grok has been incorporated into Musk’s social media platform, X(formerly Twitter). GroK is a generative AI model that has drawn attention to answering “spicy” questions and having less filtered responses compared to other AI systems. At times, Musk has claimed that AI models like ChatGPT are “too woke” and politically correct; he says Grok is much more “truth-seeking” and less biased.

The company said that it will use this funding round to improve its infrastructure, research, and development for new consumer and enterprise products. Grok is already integrated into X; for example, it currently supports a chatbot service available to premium subscribers as well as generates images from the xAI image model called Aurora. Grok might also be used with future features of X that would include search, bios of accounts, and post analytics.

xAI is aggressively working to compete with companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, and to add to this, the API to integrate Grok has been launched to merge the Grok into third-party apps. Recently, the company also launched a standalone iOS app for Grok.

Musk’s firm is also incorporating data from X into improved AI models, and they intend to bring xAI technology into other of Musk’s projects, including Tesla and SpaceX. But, by doing so, some concerns are being raised within the ranks of Tesla’s shareholders. Musk has allegedly diverted some focus away from Tesla in this business competition, some reports said.

Despite its fast growth, the revenue of xAI is very small compared to its rivals. It’s estimated at $100 million annually; companies like Anthropic and OpenAI are targeting billions in revenues. However, the expansion, including a new data center at Memphis, demonstrates how Musk’s determined efforts would grow the AI company into a significant player in the coming days.
