Amazon is aggressively investing in the artificial intelligence space to take a lead in an increasingly competitive landscape. The company is investing an additional $4 billion in AI startup Anthropic, strengthening its presence in one of OpenAI’s chief rivals.
The new investment was announced on Friday, which was over and above $4 billion investment in Anthropic completed earlier this year.
As part of the deal, Anthropic is using Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers for some of its computing needs, as well as AWS-designed AI chips.
“The latest investment establishes AWS as our primary cloud and training partner,” Anthropic said in a blog post, adding that the startup plans to use Amazon’s AI chips to develop its most advanced models.
However, post this infusion, Amazon will maintain its minority stake in the company. Amazon will make an initial additional investment of $1.3 billion in the first tranche, with the rest to follow.
Anthropic is seen as a competitor to OpenAI, whose ChatGPT has made waves across the world. Microsoft has invested heavily in OpenAI, taking a lead position in the AI space for now. Its competitors in the technology world including Google, Amazon and others are scouting for investing in promising AI startups.
