Zomato, one of India’s favorite food delivery chains, has revealed a leadership shake-up. Rakesh Ranjan, who was appointed as the CEO of Zomato’s food delivery business in June 2023, will be resigning from his position. Founder and Group CEO Deepinder Goyal will now directly oversee the company’s food delivery business for the next few months.
Although Ranjan is resigning as CEO, he will continue to work at Zomato and assume new responsibilities. This is part of Zomato’s routine leadership shuffle, which occurs every few years to keep the company on course.
Under Ranjan’s guidance, Zomato managed to cement its position among India’s leading food delivery platforms. Nevertheless, the food delivery segment has been struggling in recent times. Zomato, as well as its closest rival Swiggy, has been confronting shifting market patterns and decelerating demand.
Ranjan had earlier mentioned in a letter to shareholders in January 2023 that the slowdown in demand began around November 2022. This has affected both companies, leading to fluctuations in market share.
The leadership shift also follows another important departure at Zomato. Rinshul Chandra, the food delivery division’s Chief Operating Officer, resigned earlier this month. These shifts mirror the continued issues in the food delivery space, where both Zomato and Swiggy are experiencing decreasing consumer demand and shifting market trends.
Zomato hopes that such measures will help the company tide over the existing downturn in the food delivery segment.
