Donald Trump has put David Sacks, an influential venture capitalist and a tech entrepreneur, into one of the most significant roles within his administration. Sacks will be the “White House AI & Crypto Czar,” as he will oversee policies relating to Artificial Intelligence and Cryptocurrency, areas Trump perceives as essential for keeping America competitive in the future. He made this announcement on his social media platform, Truth Social, mentioning Sacks’ business background and leadership experience.
Sacks will oversee the protection of free speech online and help to resolve legal issues related to cryptocurrency. He will also head the Presidential Council of Advisors for Science and Technology, shaping the government’s approach to these rapidly growing industries. Trump pointed to Sacks’ success in Silicon Valley by co-founding PayPal-the online platform of making transactions, including payments-and by co-founding the social media company Yammer-which was sold for $1.2 billion to Microsoft.
Currently, he is also a podcaster. He cohosts the very popular “All-In” podcast, interviewing other technopreneurs about what’s happening, what he thinks about various business practices, politics, and some current events.
David Sacks has been one of the strongest supporters of Trump, particularly in recent years. He even hosted a fundraising event for Trump at his mansion in San Francisco. Still, this support was never a guarantee. After the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, Sacks was critical of Trump, saying that his participation in the event disqualified him from running for president again. But by 2024, Sacks had switched his opinion, and his backing for Trump served him well as a key appointment in the new administration.
Besides these achievements, Sacks is famous as the “PayPal Mafia,” a group of thriving businessmen and investors who, following their experience in PayPal, joined forces in making their names prominent in the tech world along with the likes of Musk. Indeed, Sacks and Musk date back to the late 1990s, and Musk had left under dramatic circumstances, but still have kept good relations since their working days at PayPal; currently, Sacks invests in some of the well-known companies founded by Musk like Tesla and SpaceX.
Sacks, now referred to as the “AI & Crypto Czar,” will be placed right in the middle of two emerging industries that are shaping the global economy. It goes without saying that such appointments speak of the influence tech entrepreneurs have over politics these days, especially those whose stand and ideology align with conservatism.
If Sacks can guide the United States through the challenging processes of AI and cryptocurrency regulation, it would certainly place him at the top as one of the leading businesspeople and politicians in this nation.
