Dhanteras marks the beginning of Diwali, a great festival in India. It’s a day to make special purchases of things that are supposed to bring luck, wealth, and happiness into your life. The proper purchases on this day can welcome prosperity for the coming year. Let’s see what you should and shouldn’t purchase on Dhanteras.

What to Buy on Dhanteras:

Gold and Silver:

Purchasing gold and silver on Dhanteras is regarded as extremely auspicious. Gold and silver are regarded as symbols of wealth and positive energy. Be it coins, jewelry, or utensils, possessing gold or silver is thought to bring success into your home. It’s the intention that matters more than the quantity you purchase.

New Utensils

Most people purchase new kitchenware such as plates, cups, or pots on Dhanteras. These, particularly copper, brass, or steel ones, are believed to bring prosperity and good luck to the family.

Idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh

On Dhanteras, individuals tend to purchase new idols or images of Goddess Lakshmi (goddess of wealth) and Lord Ganesh (remover of obstacles). Having these idols in your house is said to be a sign of blessings and a positive environment.

Coriander and Salt:

Numerous families purchase coriander (Dhaniya) and salt (Namak) on this day. Coriander is said to bring prosperity and health, and salt is said to ward off negative energy.

New Clothes:

It’s also common to purchase new clothing for yourself and your loved ones on Dhanteras. New clothes represent a new beginning and are supposed to bring good fortune and happiness.

Don’ts on Dhanteras:

Sharp Objects:

Do not bring sharp objects such as scissors, knives, or shattered glass into your house during Dhanteras. Such objects are believed to attract ill luck since they are regarded as objects that cut off joy and prosperity.

Iron items are also not suggested on Dhanteras, except for useful items. Iron is said to invite negative energy and can hinder the flow of good fortune.

Broken Items:

Don’t purchase broken or damaged objects such as cracked dishes or torn clothes on this day. Broken items are considered signs of bad luck and hindrances, which can jam prosperity in reaching your house.

Briefly, Dhanteras is a day to make positive purchasing decisions, to welcome happiness and prosperity into your life. You’re beginning Diwali on a positive note by purchasing the correct items and not the incorrect ones. Wishing you a happy Dhanteras and a successful Diwali!
