The AI-powered search engine, Perplexity, has secured a whopping $500 million funding. This has enabled the company to achieve the valuation of $9 billion, reports said. According to Bloomberg, Institutional Venture Partners led the round of funding, which was closed earlier in December. The company has not said anything about the news.
The AI search engine competition is rising. OpenAI has just rolled out ChatGPT Search that competes with Perplexity. Google is working on features to compete as well, including AI-generated summaries and answers in search results. This week, The Information reported that Google may introduce a new “AI mode” to Google Search that makes it more like a chatbot.
Perplexity is advancing even with this competition. The firm is currently engaged in a class action lawsuit over allegations of copyright issues, yet this has not hindered its progress. Perplexity has just made its first acquisition by purchasing Carbon, a startup that connects AI systems to external data sources.
This agreement reflects the emphasis of Perplexity in increasing its abilities, particularly in the aspect of connecting AI systems with other information. Because the development of AI search engines is still in its developmental stages, Perplexity has been working to remain competitive within the fast-paced industry. Funding and acquisition will bolster the company’s status as an industry leader in AI search technology.
As the AI search market gains momentum, Perplexity, Google, and OpenAI, among others, are scrambling to provide improved services. In this effort, the acquisition and this new round of funding give Perplexity a means to better itself in front of competitors.
