Oracle has announced a new round of layoffs in India as it seeks to cut costs and revamp its team structure. Layoffs have been issued to employees from various departments.
The new round of layoffs was initiated in the US on September 14 and then followed by India. Sources have indicated that those employed in product engineering were more impacted compared to those in support and consulting teams. Some senior employees associated with OFSS teams located outside India have also reportedly faced layoffs.
The number of employees laid off in India is not yet certain. Initial estimates indicate that around 3,000 employees in India could be affected by this move. Globally, some internal estimates have stated that between 7,000 and 10,000 could be affected. One source claimed that the global workforce of Oracle had shrunk by roughly 5,000 to 6,000 by September 15.
It should be noted that this number may vary as the layoffs are conducted in various phases. Employees have discussed this issue on internal Slack channels, but these discussions are not conclusive regarding the number of people who got fired.
These layoffs have caused anxiety among the employees. According to reports, many employees were caught unaware as there was no prior notice from top management. In some instances, the employees were working normally just before getting the notice to leave.
These layoffs happen when Oracle is investing a lot in artificial intelligence as well as cloud technologies. Oracle is trying to manage the costs and other requirements of the company along with these massive investments.
Oracle announced early this year that the company has cut down its workforce by roughly 21,000 positions in the 12 months period ending May 31. The figure accounted for 13% of the total global workforce of Oracle, which is around 141,000 employees. Some reports from external sources estimated that the actual number of layoffs could be close to 30,000.
The termination email from Oracle mentioned that the position held by the employees was eliminated due to organisational changes and the current requirements of the business. The employees were also informed regarding their severance packages as per the policy of Oracle. There was no more access to Oracle systems for those employees.
Further downsizing could take place since Oracle is still going through a cost-cutting process.
