OpenAI, the organization that made ChatGPT, has inked a large contract with the U.S. Defense Department. The contract is worth $200 million and is for creating special artificial intelligence (AI) tools. The U.S. government desires to utilize these tools for aiding national security and defense requirements.

The job will primarily be conducted within and around Washington, D.C., and is hoped to be completed by July 2026, says the Pentagon. The aim is to develop strong and intelligent AI systems that can assist in various fields, such as during wartime and for standard military purposes.

The Pentagon announced that OpenAI will develop prototype frontier AI technologies. These are initial versions of cutting-edge AI technologies that have the potential to solve extremely serious security issues. These technologies will enable the U.S. military and defense systems to become smarter and quicker.

OpenAI is already expanding rapidly. The company last week reported that its annual revenue rate had hit $10 billion through June 2025. That means it is making a great deal of money, courtesy of the increasing use of AI globally. OpenAI is likely to achieve its financial targets this year.

Earlier this March 2025, OpenAI also made a statement that it would be raising as much as $40 billion in a new funding round. The funding is being spearheaded by SoftBank Group, a huge tech investor. The total value of OpenAI was valued at $300 billion, indicating just how significant and successful the company has been. OpenAI had 500 million weekly active users as of March.

The U.S. government has begun to focus more on AI and how it will be utilized in a safe and equitable manner. The White House released new regulations in April to ensure that AI is utilized in terms of benefit to the government and the public. The new regulations are not applied to defense and national security initiatives, such as the one OpenAI is undertaking.

This new agreement is a major milestone for OpenAI. It indicates that the company is emerging as a leading player not only in the technology sector but in assisting in the protection of the nation via intelligent technology as well.
