AI is opening a new front in the cybersecurity battle after researchers uncovered critical vulnerabilities in PHP, the programming language that powers millions of websites and web applications. The discovery has triggered urgent security warnings, with authorities urging organisations to update vulnerable systems immediately.

The vulnerabilities, identified as CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619 and collectively known as “PHP2Shell,” could allow attackers to execute malicious commands remotely on affected servers without authentication. If successfully exploited, the flaws could expose sensitive information, compromise website infrastructure and disrupt online services.

What is PHP and why is it important for website security?

Websites use the PHP programming language behind the scenes. When a user loads a page, the server running PHP processes the code, assembles the content and sends the finished page to the browser.

It is free, open source and maintained by volunteers. Site owners rarely interact with it directly.

According to W3Techs data published in October 2026, PHP powers approximately 69.3% of websites whose server-side programming language is known, while WordPress runs on around 40% of all websites worldwide. However, outdated software remains a significant security concern: W3Techs reports that 26.9% of PHP websites use PHP 7 and 7.7% use PHP 5. Older versions may no longer receive official security updates, leaving websites at risk if vulnerabilities remain unpatched. These figures highlight the scale of the potential exposure, although they do not mean that all websites running older PHP versions are vulnerable to the same attack.

What is PHP2Shell ?

PHP2Shell is a critical security vulnerability in PHP that could allow attackers to execute malicious commands on affected servers remotely. If exploited, it may put websites, server data and online services at risk. The issue highlights the importance of updating PHP to a secure version and applying recommended security patches to protect websites from potential cyberattacks.

AI changes the cybersecurity threat landscape

The discovery highlights the growing role of AI in finding complex software vulnerabilities. Security researchers have used AI-assisted techniques to analyse and identify bugs that could otherwise require extensive manual investigation.

The same technology could also help malicious actors analyse software, identify unpatched systems and develop attacks more quickly. This creates a growing challenge for website owners, hosting providers and security teams racing to protect exposed systems.

According to Wiz Research, the PHP2Shell findings involve serious flaws in the PHP engine itself, rather than a vulnerability limited to one website plugin.

Why PHP vulnerabilities are a major concern ?

PHP is widely used across the internet, including in content management systems and web applications. Platforms such as WordPress, Drupal and Joomla can rely on PHP, making the security of the underlying runtime important for website operators.

A vulnerable server could face risks including:

Website takeover: Attackers could potentially execute unauthorised commands on affected servers.

Data exposure: Sensitive information stored or processed by compromised systems could be at risk.

Service disruption: Organisations may need to restrict access or temporarily take systems offline while applying fixes.

Further attacks: A compromised server could become a starting point for additional malicious activity.
These are potential consequences of successful exploitation, not evidence that every PHP website has been compromised.

Security agencies urge immediate action

On October 21, 2026, European cybersecurity authorities called on organisations to identify affected PHP installations and apply the available security updates. The US National Security Agency also warned organisations to prioritise patching and consider taking vulnerable systems offline if they cannot be secured promptly.

The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommended upgrading affected installations to the fixed PHP releases and monitoring systems for suspicious activity. Source: CISA advisory.

The Dutch National Cyber Security Centre subsequently reported that exploitation remained complex and that the likelihood of widespread exploitation appeared lower than initially estimated, while continuing to urge organisations to install the fixes.

What website owners should do now ?

Website owners and IT administrators should take the following steps:

Check the PHP version: Confirm which PHP runtime is being used by the website and hosting environment.

Install security updates: Apply the appropriate vendor-provided patches as soon as possible.

Check CMS and plugins: Update WordPress, themes, plugins and other software, while confirming that the underlying PHP runtime is also protected.

Review security logs: Look for suspicious requests, unexpected file changes, unfamiliar administrator accounts and unusual server processes.

Maintain secure backups: Keep independent backups and verify that the website can be restored if necessary.
A web application firewall may provide an additional layer of protection, but it should not replace the required security updates.

The bigger warning for the internet

The PHP2Shell incident illustrates how AI can accelerate vulnerability discovery while potentially giving attackers new ways to identify weaknesses. As AI-assisted security research advances, organisations may have less time to respond between the discovery of a flaw and attempts to exploit it.

For website owners, the immediate priority is clear: identify vulnerable systems, install the appropriate fixes and verify that the updates are active. AI is becoming a powerful cybersecurity tool, but the protection of online services still depends on timely patching, effective monitoring and sound security practices.
