A fierce battle has been initiated between Iran and Israel. This is not only impacting those nations, but the entire world. Airlines are being held up, gas prices are increasing, and many feel it may plunge the world into a major war with other countries as well.
What Started It?
Israel initiated a military strike against Iran in the early hours of Friday. They named it “Operation Lion.” Israel aimed to halt what it describes as an emerging threat from Iran. They hit military bases, nuclear facilities, and key military officials. Some Iranian top commanders and nuclear experts were reported to have been killed.
Retaliating, Iran launched its missiles back. Some were intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system and assistance from the US. Others made it through and possibly struck major Israeli targets, such as a military headquarters building in Tel Aviv.
5 Major Effects of This Conflict
- Oil Prices Rising
Oil prices went up by over 9% after Israel’s attack. Brent crude crossed $78 per barrel, the highest in five months.
Iran makes about 3.3 million barrels of oil every day, and most of it goes to China and Turkey.
The conflict may also impact the Strait of Hormuz – a critical shipping route for oil from nations such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE. If it is shut down, oil prices may increase even further.
- Airspace Shutdown
Immediately after the attacks, aircraft began to steer away from Iran. Live maps indicated flights turning back from Iranian airspace. It resulted in significant air traffic redirection.
- Flight Delays and Changes
Most international flights are now longer, more expensive, or have been cancelled. For instance, an Air India flight from Mumbai to London had to be turned back after three hours. Dozens of other Air India flights were hit as well.
- No More Nuclear Talks
Iran now insists it will not negotiate with the US over its nuclear program. Iran accuses the US of supporting attacks by Israel. The US denies it but knew ahead of time about the attack.
- Wider West Asian Conflict
It is only worsening in neighboring countries as well. Iranian-supported militias such as Hezbollah and the Houthis are involved. Missiles have landed in sections of Syria and even caused Jordan to scramble jets in order to defend its airspace.
If the battle persists, it would result in a much larger war between more nations, even including the United States.
