OpenAI, the owner of ChatGPT, is again in the crosshairs of media outlets for breaching copyright norms.
According to reports, five Canadian news media companies have initiated a legal action against OpenAI, accusing the artificial-intelligence company of breaching copyright frequently and online terms of use.
The Canadian news publishers – Torstar, Postmedia, The Globe and Mail, The Canadian Press, and CBC/Radio-Canada said OpenAI was scraping large volume of content to develop its AI-based product without any permission from these news publishers or compensating them.
“Journalism is in the public interest. OpenAI using other companies’ journalism for their own commercial gain is not. It’s illegal,” the publishers said.
“Rather than seek to obtain the information legally, OpenAI has elected to brazenly misappropriate the News Media Companies’ valuable intellectual property and convert it for its own uses, including commercial uses, without consent or consideration,” they said in the filing.
Meanwhile, OpenAI said it closely collaborates with news publishers and provide them an option to opt out if they desire.
