The cordial relationship between Elon Musk and ex-President Donald Trump appears to have ended. Musk, who was an earlier Trump supporter, recently made a fierce assault on the Republican tax and spending bill, calling it a “disgusting abomination.” Musk’s remarks were a complete departure from their earlier cordial relationships.
Musk had been a strong Trump supporter, giving about $250 million to his re-election campaign. Trump responded by making Musk the head of the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in 2024, whose job was to curb government expenditure and trim federal workers. Musk’s tenure brought massive layoffs and budget reductions, and the department championed a radical proposal to trim the U.S. federal budget by $2 trillion.
But things started to go downhill as Musk grew increasingly critical of Trump’s policies. In the past few weeks, Musk became critical of Trump’s tax bill, which the House of Representatives approved with Trump’s backing. Musk’s “kill the bill” call appeared to be the last straw.
Trump was disappointed when questioned about the issue. Although he did not speak adversely of Musk himself, he admitted that their relationship had been strained. Trump further stated that he had assisted Musk previously, but now that the relationship was no longer as strong, it seemed unlikely that such favor would be repeated.
Musk’s rebuke was not only of the tax bill. He also referenced Trump’s previous tweets, wherein the former president denounced Republicans for raising the debt ceiling and not balancing the budget. Musk further distanced himself by posting a tweet on his platform X (formerly Twitter) that quoted one of Trump’s previous tweets denouncing the rise in the debt ceiling.
The deterioration in their relationship occurred also at a time when Trump pulled the nomination for Musk’s friend, Jared Isaacman, to become NASA’s next administrator. Trump’s action created further tension since Musk had wanted Isaacman to get the job. Isaacman’s rejection appeared to have been based on his connections with Democratic donors, Republican sources state.
Ultimately, what began as a robust political alliance between Trump and Musk now appears to be disintegrating, with Musk still resisting Trump’s policies and abandoning the previously firm alliance.
