The stocks of various capital market entities including BSE, Angel One, Groww, Nuvama Wealth Management, HDFC AMC and ICICI Prudential AMC gained attention on October 16 due to new regulations introduced by market regulator SEBI.
What Has SEBI Modified?
SEBI has modified the existing rules for the Closing Auction Session (CAS). The Closing Auction Session is responsible for determining the closing price of shares at the end of the trading.
As per the new rules, the CAS period would be 3:30 to 3:40 pm on each trading day. The trading in stock and index derivatives would be continued up to 3:45 pm except when the contract would expire on that particular day.
SEBI has also modified the way in which the final settlement price of expiring derivatives contracts is determined. The final settlement price would be calculated based on Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) for the last 30 minutes of normal trading periods. To put it simply, VWAP takes into account the volume and price of share transactions.
Why Does It Matter?
SEBI seeks to bring transparency and fairness in the process of closing of the market.
Performance of Stocks in Capital Market
Unlike the statements made by SEBI, most of the capital market stocks declined in value in the morning trading session on October 16.
The BSE stock price fell by about 2.36%, Angel One stock fell by 3.47%, HDFC AMC stock fell by 1.20%, and ICICI Prudential AMC stock fell by 0.56%. Nifty Capital Markets index also fell by 1.34%.
On the other hand, Groww stock increased in price by 1.38%, and Nuvama Wealth Management stock increased by 0.23%.
Important Points for Investors
The new regulations by SEBI might facilitate the trading process, but they will not ensure that more profits are made through the stock exchange or the brokers. The stock prices may also depend on the market situation, the mood of investors and selling profits.
Investors must, therefore, know the changes and evaluate the company’s performance before investing.
