The United States Supreme Court on Friday ruled against President Donald Trump’s tariffs on the country’s trading partners. The Supreme Court in a 6-3 verdict said that the use of emergency powers to justify the sweeping trade measures is in violation of the Federal law.
The tariffs were challenged by businesses affected by the duties and 12 US states after lower courts found that Trump had exceeded the powers granted to him under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
With this verdict, all the trade deals signed by the Trump administration may be nullified. The US may have to return the taxes collected since its imposition to its trading partners. Analysts see the Trump administration finding a way to stay with the tariff plan through some other executive measures.
