Reliance Industries’ Chairman, Mukesh Ambani said in its 48th General Meeting that the company is launching Reliance Intelligence, a fully-owned subsidiary of RIL. Reliance Intelligence becomes the flagship company of RIL to focus on AI-powered platforms and solutions for serving Indian consumers.

“AI is already at the heart of Reliance’s transformation into a deep-tech enterprise… A decade ago, digital services became a new growth engine for Reliance. Now, the opportunity before us with AI is just as large, if not larger. Jio promised and delivered digital everywhere and for every Indian. Similarly, Reliance Intelligence promises to deliver AI everywhere for every Indian,” Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of RIL, said about the new venture.

Interestingly, Google and Meta will be partners of RIL in its AI venture.

Why Reliance’s entry into AI space is significant and why the conglomerate is entering into an emerging technology like AI space? The reasons are many:

1- AI is seen as a transformative technology:

Many see the evolution of AI as a significant technology that can bring in transformative changes across sectors. Many consider it the next level of internet innovation. Globally, AI has started to shape the functioning of multiple sectors from established processes. Most big firms in the US, China, Europe, Middle East are pumping in billions of dollars into AI space to have fast-mover advtantage. In this perspective, $208 billion strong RIL has now joined the bandwagon of AI race.

2- Reliance’s existing relationship with Google and Meta:

RIL has existing relationship with Google and Meta through its Jio, its telecom business unit. These tech giants have also taken stake in Reliance Intelligence. As both these companies are investing billions in building LLMs, enterprise and consuer-specific AI solutions, such partnership works in favour of Reliance Intelligence.

3- There is a gap in India:

Despite all the development in AI space, deeptech companies with AI focus have lower than desired presence in India. Indian IT services companies are investing in the AI space but their focus is more on services side of business than building core platforms. Moreover, Indian IT firms’ have been historically neglecting India as a market with foreign firms like Accenture & IBM having better engagement with Indian companies. Therefore, Reliance Intelligence’s focus on India as a market is timely and a welcome move. RIL has proven track record of operating at scale with Reliance Jio being a success story.

4- India is a talent hub:

Indian technology professionals have upskilled rapidly in recent years to stay relevant in the AI age. Many innovators working in AI space in the US are Indians. So, therefore, there is no derth of talent in India. RIL can leverage this factor into its advantage.

It has to be seen how Reliance Intelligence innovates in the AI space, keeping in eye the Indian requirements.
