Pune, 15 August 2026

U.S. wheat prices are supported by tighter 2026/27 supply prospects, with production lowered to 1,531 million bushels and ending stocks cut to 717 million, down 22% year on year. The USDA also raised the season-average farm price forecast by $0.20 to $6.20 per bushel, reflecting a lower stocks-to-use ratio and firmer futures and cash prices. Globally, wheat supplies are forecast higher at 1,099.5 million tonnes, while consumption rises marginally to 826.3 million tonnes. World trade is reduced to 212.7 million tonnes due to lower Russian and Ukrainian exports amid Black Sea disruptions. Global ending stocks increase to 273.3 million tonnes.

Key Highlights

  • U.S. 2026/27 wheat production forecast falls 5 million bushels to 1,531 million bushels.
  • U.S. ending stocks decline 5 million bushels to 717 million, down 22% year on year.
  • USDA raises U.S. season-average farm price forecast by $0.20 to $6.20 per bushel.
  • Global wheat supplies rise 0.5 million tonnes to 1,099.5 million tonnes despite lower production.
  • Global wheat trade falls 0.3 million tonnes to 212.7 million amid Russia-Ukraine disruptions.

U.S. wheat prices are likely to retain a firm undertone after the USDA lowered its 2026/27 production forecast by 5 million bushels to 1,531 million bushels. The reduction was driven by lower harvested area and yields, with Hard Red Winter and Durum wheat accounting for most of the decline. Tighter domestic availability has also pushed projected ending stocks down by 5 million bushels to 717 million, representing a 22% decline from last year.

The tighter stocks outlook has strengthened the price outlook, with the USDA raising the 2026/27 season-average farm price by $0.20 per bushel to $6.20. The increase reflects a lower stocks-to-use ratio and expectations for firmer futures and cash prices during the remainder of the marketing year. Domestic use and exports, however, remain unchanged, limiting the overall bullish impact from the supply reduction.

Globally, the wheat balance sheet remains comparatively well supplied. Total 2026/27 supplies are projected at 1,099.5 million tonnes, up 0.5 million tonnes, as higher beginning stocks more than offset lower production. Wheat production was reduced in the European Union, United Kingdom and Brazil, with prolonged above-average temperatures during grain filling weighing on yields in the EU and UK.

Global consumption is marginally higher at 826.3 million tonnes, supported by increased feed and residual use, particularly in the EU as tighter corn availability encourages greater wheat feeding. World trade is lowered by 0.3 million tonnes to 212.7 million, mainly due to reduced Russian and Ukrainian exports amid Black Sea and Sea of Azov logistical disruptions. Despite this, global ending stocks rise 0.4 million tonnes to 273.3 million tonnes.

Tighter U.S. stocks and higher domestic price expectations support wheat, while ample global inventories and weaker trade limit the upside.
