Snapchat, the popular social media platform from Snap, is enhancing its augmented reality (AR) features with its latest generative AI technology. This innovation will enable users to enjoy more lifelike and immersive special effects while recording videos with their phone cameras.
Snap has been a pioneer in augmented reality (AR), which adds digital effects to real-world images. Although smaller than giants like Meta, Snap believes that these improved special effects, known as lenses, will draw new users and advertisers to Snapchat.
The new AI-driven lenses are now open to AR developers, allowing them to design more advanced and creative experiences for Snapchat users to use in their posts. Snap has also launched a significant update to its developer platform, Lens Studio, offering artists and developers tools to create AR features not just for Snapchat but also for other online platforms and applications.
“What’s fun for us is that these tools both stretch the creative space in which people can work, but they’re also easy to use, so newcomers can build something unique very quickly,” stated Bobby Murphy, Snap’s Chief Technology Officer.
The upgraded Lens Studio now features a range of AI tools, including an AI assistant for developers’ questions. There’s also a new tool allowing artists to generate 3D images from text prompts, bypassing manual modeling. This development represents a big step forward in AR technology. Previous versions were limited to basic effects, like adding a hat to a video. With the new AI tools, developers can create more lifelike lenses that seamlessly adjust to a person’s movements and match the lighting in the video.
Snap is now working on creating AR experiences that cover the entire body, with a focus on generating realistic outfits and other effects.
