Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra has been appointed as the next Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) as Shaktikanta Das tenure ends this week.
Malhotra will take charge from Wednesday for three years, a statement from Indian government said. Malhotra is a 1990-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Rajasthan cadre, who is currently serving as the Revenue Secretary.
A Computer Science graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, he also holds a Master’s in Public Policy from Princeton University, US. He has extensive experience in finance and taxation at the state as well as the central government level.
The outgoing Governor, Shaktikanta Das has an outstanding tenure at RBI, who has managed the monetary policy well, enabling India to navigate COVID-induced slowdown successfully. Das is also instrumental in bringing in many reforms across financial services sector. Under his stewardship, confidence of foreign investors have grown, leading to record level of equity markets.
It’s not clear whether Das will be assigned with any other important role in Modi government in coming days.
