OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman has been in the news in recent weeks as a major leadership churn hits the ChatGPT maker. Moreover, plans to turn OpenAI into a for-profit corporation from present non-profit one has raised eyebrows in the tech circle. Despite these controversies, Sam Altman is considered as one of the most influential technology leaders of our times.

Since childhood, Sam Altman has been exploring technology innovation and striving for positive change. His upbringing has a major influence on his research mindset. Born to a mother, who is a dermatologist and father, who is a researcher; Altman has a love for computers since childhood. No doubt, the tech leader has been a good student with proficiency in math and science in school. Born on April 22, 1985, Altman went on to join Stanford University in 2003 for pursuing a computer science degree.

He too felt it as too confining and dropped out after two years into college. Subsequently, he started his entrepreneurial journey. He co-founded Loopt in the summer of 2005 with friends from Stanford as a location-based social networking application. It was one of the early GPS connection applications that enabled users to allow their friends and discover near-by attractions through a GPS location, and it was in use at the time when Loopt was developed. The application drew the attention of investors and got accepted in Y Combinator, which is considered as one of the acclaimed startup accelerators in the world. Paul Graham mentored him, teaching him lessons, vital leadership experience, and how to grow a startup. Despite raising more than $30 million, Loopt failed to achieve mass success, eventually selling to Green Dot Corporation in 2012. However, that was a very important learning curve for his future.

Altman continued working with Y Combinator until becoming its president in 2014. There, he played a major role in the launch of other companies that successfully worked out like Airbnb and Dropbox. In 2015, he co-founded OpenAI with some of best researchers. OpenAI, since its inception, has been non-profit in nature with an objective to ensure that the power of AI is made available to all humankind. The stated aim of OpenAI has been to develop AI solution that works in solving problems faced by mankind.

Under Altman, Open AI has rolled out some groundbreaking innovations: the Large Language Model (LLM) GPT-3 where one can generate human-like text and DALL·E where images are created based on descriptions. He underlines AI design ethics with a thrust towards factors of safety and world-changing long after the design is over. This journey depicts a life of chasing a dream, taking risks, and learning from mentors. The whole story of Sam Altman is an epitome of entrepreneurial spirit whereby curiosity and resilience kindle a form of innovation and value change.
