India has taken a significant step in the global clean energy race as Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) commissioned a 3.37 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Khavda, Gujarat — the world’s largest single-location battery storage deployment outside China.

While China continues to dominate global battery storage capacity and manufacturing, AGEL’s rapid execution highlights India’s accelerating push to build large-scale energy storage infrastructure to support renewable power expansion.

Delivered in just 10 months, the Khavda project ranks among the fastest utility-scale battery storage deployments globally. The system strengthens grid reliability, enables peak-hour power supply, and supports round-the-clock renewable energy delivery.

AGEL plans to expand battery storage capacity aggressively, targeting over 10 GWh in FY27 and 50 GWh within the next five years, signalling India’s ambition to narrow the gap with China in next-generation energy infrastructure.

The 3.37 GWh BESS can store enough clean electricity to power nearly one million homes for a day, or support peak demand comparable to cities such as Indore, Chandigarh, or the entire state of Goa.

China currently leads the global battery storage market through massive investments in utility-scale storage projects and lithium-ion manufacturing. However, India’s growing renewable energy capacity is creating strong demand for storage systems that can manage intermittency and ensure reliable clean power supply.

Located at Khavda, Gujarat, AGEL’s battery storage system supports the company’s broader plan to develop the world’s largest renewable energy park, targeting 30 GW capacity by 2029, with 9.9 GW already operational.

Sagar Adani, Executive Director, AGEL, said, “Large-scale energy storage will play a defining role in the next phase of India’s clean energy transition. As renewable energy capacity scales rapidly, storage infrastructure becomes critical for delivering reliable, round-the-clock clean power. With the commissioning of the 3.37 GWh BESS at Khavda, AGEL is strengthening the foundation for resilient, dispatchable and flexible energy systems. Our investments in battery storage reflect a long-term commitment to building future-ready clean energy infrastructure at global scale.”
