The new AI model can solve complex problems faster and more accurately

Athira Sethu

Kochi, 16 September

OpenAI has introduced a new and advanced AI model called ‘o1’, which is a major improvement in artificial intelligence space.

This model is designed to solve difficult problems, like challenging math and science questions, much more accurately than earlier models like GPT-4. The o1 model works by breaking down complex problems into smaller steps, which helps it to find better solutions.

This makes it especially useful for professionals like scientists, engineers, and researchers who need reliable results for tough tasks. However, one drawback is that ‘o1’ takes longer to respond and is more expensive to use compared to older models.

The o1 model comes in two versions- ‘o1-preview’ and ‘o1-mini’. These versions are more advanced and do better at solving difficult questions. For example, in a math competition at the high school level, o1 answered 83% of questions correctly, compared to only 13% for GPT-4. It also performed very well in challenging science questions, doing better than GPT-4 and even human experts.

One of the best features of the ‘o1’ model is that it makes fewer mistakes, especially when giving wrong answers. It’s also harder to trick into providing harmful or inappropriate responses, making it safer to use. However, it still has some limitations. For instance, it can be slower to respond, sometimes taking up to 30 seconds for questions, and it doesn’t work with images, audio, or video only text.

Another thing to know is that users have to choose whether to use the o1 model or an older model like GPT-4 manually. It’s not yet fully part of OpenAI’s main system. Despite these challenges, the o1 model is expected to make a big difference in areas like science and finance. It could help solve important problems in fields like chemistry, engineering, and business, leading to new discoveries and innovations.

However, use of the o1 model will cost more. Businesses that use OpenAI’s services will have to pay $15 per 1 million input tokens and $60 per 1 million output tokens, which is much higher than GPT-4’s costs. The model can also become more accurate if given more time and resources, which could mean businesses will need to invest more in computing power.

OpenAI has also made sure that the ‘o1’ model is safer. It’s less likely to produce harmful or biased responses, but there are still risks. For example, the model could be misused in dangerous situations, or it could influence people’s opinions or actions. Even though the model isn’t conscious or self-aware, these risks highlight the need to be cautious.

In summary, the ‘o1’ model is a big step forward in AI technology. It can solve complex problems more accurately, but it takes longer to respond and costs more to use. Its ability to help in fields like science and finance is very promising, but users need to be careful to use it responsibly.
