Chinese AI firm DeepSeek has made a move that has the potential to shake up the AI industry by providing developers with discounted prices if they wish to utilize its AI models to create their own products. This announcement was made on Wednesday via the company’s website. The move may pressure other firms, both within China and globally, to reduce their prices in turn.
Hangzhou based DeepSeek launched a new pricing model that slashes the cost of leveraging its AI models by as much as 75% in certain hours. The reduced prices are offered from 4:30 PM to 12:30 AM GMT. From this period, developers can access DeepSeek’s API (a system that assists other developers to incorporate AI in their solutions) at a significantly lower price. For instance, the price of using two of its best-selling AI models, R1 and V3, will be 75% and 50% lower, respectively, during these times.
The period is described by the firm as “off-peak” because it is outside normal working hours in China. Yet this is daytime in Europe and America, where DeepSeek’s low-priced AI models have already had a major impact. The low-priced models have sent investors into alarm, prompting a decline in the price of stocks in the technology sector last month.
This action by DeepSeek is only the most recent in a string of steps that have shaken the AI world. The company’s campaign for cheaper prices began in May when it launched an updated version of its AI model, V2. This launch ignited a price war for AI models in China. DeepSeek has since then remained committed to offering cheap options for developers.
DeepSeek’s success has also had a ripple effect on other large corporations in the AI sector. OpenAI, which developed ChatGPT, cut its prices following DeepSeek’s influence. Google’s Gemini AI has also come out with reduced plans. Following DeepSeek’s increasing influence, most people think the company is revolutionizing the way the AI market operates by offering powerful tools at reduced costs.
DeepSeek’s model for low-cost, open-source AI models has generated a lot of buzz, and it’s safe to say that the company will continue to push the limits of what can be done at low costs with technology. As DeepSeek continues to introduce new AI models, such as the replacement for its R1 model, it will continue to pressure other companies to compete on both price and quality.
