Adobe is creating new artificial intelligence (AI) features for its hit programs, Photoshop and Premiere Pro, to help make editing simpler for consumers. They are called “creative agents” and can recommend photo and video edits and execute them automatically, the company released in a blog post by Ely Greenfield, Adobe’s Chief Technology Officer for digital media.
In Photoshop, the AI agent will be seen on a new floating “Actions” panel. It will examine an image and provide suggestions for what it notices. For instance, it may propose the removal of people in the background or blurring it to make the focal point stand out. Users can just click on a suggestion, and the agent will carry out the action.
This is a significant departure from the typical usage of Photoshop. Advanced users tend to spend time masking image regions and using several layers. Although Adobe already has AI-driven tools like Distraction Removal and Generative Fill, the new agent takes it a step further by providing intelligent, context-sensitive suggestions and fully automating edits.
The AI agents will also comprehend natural language instructions, so users can simply type instructions such as “clean up the image” or “insert a text box in the background of the subject.” The agent will execute those instructions and display each step performed, so users can learn to perform the edits themselves if they prefer.
In one of Adobe’s examples, the agent stripped away background individuals, lightened the image, erased distractions, and added text and subject layers—all from a single prompt.
For Premiere Pro, Adobe is expanding on its just-released Media Intelligence tool. The feature assists editors in locating specific clips by parsing the video’s content. Future AI tools in Premiere will aid in tasks such as creating rough cuts, color adjustment, audio mixing, and more.
Greenfield emphasized that the intent behind such AI technologies is not to replace creativity but to augment it. “Although AI cannot substitute human creative inspiration, with your input, it is possible for AI to make some educated guesses that assist you to take your project to its start,” he posted.
Adobe intends to reveal its first Photoshop AI agent during its Adobe Max convention in London on April 24.
