Kochi, 24 March 2025

India is developing its own large language model (LLM) to improve the country’s requirements. The initiative is in line with IndiaAI Mission and aims to get India self-dependent in artificial intelligence (AI). The government is investing Rs 10,370 crore to formulate this technology that will enhance AI in the nation.

The IndiaAI Mission

The IndiaAI Mission wants to create an AI system that knows India’s numerous languages and issues. In contrast to existing AI systems created for the entire world, India’s LLM will be tailored to Indian needs. The government is looking to create this LLM within 4 to 8 months using sophisticated technology such as 18,693 GPUs to accelerate the process.

Advantages of India Building Its Own LLM

  1. Improved Language Support

India has numerous languages and dialects. Most current AI systems are designed for languages such as English, which is not ideal for Indian languages. By developing its own LLM, India can have improved support for local languages, and AI can be useful for everyone throughout the country.

  1. Control Over Data and Security

With its own AI, India will be able to control its data. Nowadays, there are issues regarding data security with foreign AI systems. India’s LLM will store sensitive information securely within the country.

  1. Solving Local Problems

India has special problems in agriculture, healthcare, and education. AI can assist farmers with weather reports in their own languages, assist doctors with health information, and help students with educational aids. The LLM will be designed to address India-specific problem-solving.

  1. Inducing Research and Innovation

With the new AI facility, India will have the tools needed to create more AI solutions. Researchers will be able to develop new technologies that can help solve local problems, making India a leader in AI innovation.

  1. Global Leadership in AI

By creating its own LLM, India will cut its dependence on imported technology. This will make India a front-runner in the field of AI and demonstrate to the world how AI models that grasp various cultures and languages can be developed.

  1. Assisting Local Businesses

Local startups and businesses will also gain from India’s LLM. They can utilize this AI to develop solutions for the Indian market without relying on costly foreign technologies.

India’s move to develop its own LLM is a giant leap towards becoming self-reliant in AI. This will enable India to develop AI that is optimized for its population, addressing practical problems in farming, healthcare, and education, among others. The initiative will also position India as a leading nation in the world when it comes to AI technology.
