Sriram Krishnan is an Indian-American entrepreneur and venture capitalist. He has come a long way to become the best known in the world of tech. Born in 1984 in Chennai, India, he has had his work experience at the largest companies in Silicon Valley: Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter, and Snap. He helped create several major products in the world of tech and today, plays a crucial role in the world of artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies.
Krishnan grew up in Chennai, having an interest in computers at a tender age. He convinced his dad to buy him a computer due to the family’s limited resources, and he spent all the time learning to code with books, which laid the grounds for his future career. Krishnan pursued his graduate studies in Information Technology from SRM Engineering College at Anna University from 2001 to 2005.
Krishnan joined Microsoft in 2007 as a program manager for Visual Studio. He soon gained acclamation for his leadership capabilities and his ability to assist in driving product development. Subsequently, at Facebook, he worked on building the Facebook Audience Network, which competed with Google’s ad products. At Twitter, he led teams which redesigned the homepage of the site and introduced new features. At Snap, he also helped improve the products of the platform, further solidifying his reputation as a tech leader.
Krishnan joined Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), a leading Silicon Valley firm, in 2021, making the transition into venture capital. As a General Partner, he concentrated on investments in emerging technologies such as AI and cryptocurrency. Krishnan played an important role in expanding the firm’s reach, including opening its first international office in London. He believes that technologies like AI and Web3 will transform industries in the coming years.
Krishnan was named as the Senior White House Policy Advisor for Artificial Intelligence in December 2024. Here, he will be contributing to the shaping of AI policy in the United States to continue to innovate but also work out regulatory challenges. Krishnan’s knowledge in AI is a vital tool for the United States as it tries to stay at the helm of this technology.
Krishnan and his wife, Aarthi Ramamurthy, are popular names in the tech world. They host a popular podcast called ‘The Aarthi and Sriram Show’, discussing trends in tech, entrepreneurship, and more. The couple got married in 2010 after they met in college in 2003.
Krishnan is also very vocal in his advocacy of changes in U.S. immigration policies, especially regarding the H-1B visa program. Under this program, companies can hire skilled foreign workers, but currently, there is a cap on how many visas can go to workers from any one country, especially India. Krishnan is in support of removing such caps to allow more skilled workers, especially from India, to work in the U.S.
Sriram Krishnan has demonstrated how passion and relentless hard work with some aspects of leadership eventually lead to success. What may have started as merely typing away in his tiny home lab in Chennai eventually had an impact on the overall strategy behind technology and public policy across several states.
