Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, will upgrade its supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee, significantly. From 100,000 GPUs to over one million, the Colossus system will soon see an increase in GPU count. This supercomputer is vital for training its chatbot, Grok, and competing with others like OpenAI.
The Greater Memphis Chamber on Wednesday announced the plans but added that Nvidia, the GPU supplier, along with Dell and Super Micro, which will build the server racks, will also locate operations in Memphis. This is a landmark development for the city that will become an important hub for advanced AI technology.
Colossus was the focus of Musk’s campaigns in his efforts against OpenAI, led by Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman. He escalated his dispute with OpenAI by taking this case to court, accusing the tech firms of OpenAI and Microsoft of monopolistic activities unfairly dominating the AI marketplace.
However, an expansion of Colossus has raised environmental concerns. In fact, data centers, such as Colossus, consume a huge amount of power, and local activists and legislators are calling on the concerned authorities to investigate its impact. In August, the Southern Environmental Law Center asked Tennessee officials whether xAI was using gas turbines to power the supercomputer without proper permits.
This move is an indication of the commitment that Musk has to the development of AI, competition with top players in this field, and also the debate about the growth in balancing technological progress with environmental responsibility.
