The stocks of eMudhra Limited will continue to be in the limelight following an announcement by the company regarding its intention to leave the global SSL/TLS certificate business. The reason for this decision is that there was a security problem with some of the company’s digital certificates.
Why Is eMudhra Leaving This Business?
Speaking to reporters, Chairman of eMudhra Limited, V. Srinivasan, revealed that the company’s management had decided to exit from the global SSL/TLS certificate business after analyzing the situation.
He added that this business represents about 1% of the company’s total income. He further noted that compliance issues, high operating costs, and competition from other firms offering free SSL/TLS certificates have made this business less appealing to the firm.
Incident Overview
According to the advisory released by CERT-In, India’s government cybersecurity agency, the incident involved private keys associated with eight intermediate certificate authorities, including six TLS certificates and two code-signing certificates.
Private keys are digital security means used to verify users’ identity and secure communications on the Internet. In case such keys are exposed to hackers, they will be able to use them to forge false digital identities and pretend to be legitimate websites.
eMudhra claimed there was a vulnerability in its system which led to the generation of weak keys together with their stronger counterparts. A security researcher suggested that the weak keys could be reversed engineered.
eMudhra claims that it managed to discover the problem and revoke the certificate authorities in 14 hours.
Were Other eMudhra Services Affected?
The company reported that the incident had only affected one of its TLS businesses in the world. It claimed that its infrastructure had not been breached and there was no breach of data.
It was also clarified that the Indian Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) and eSign services of the company were not impacted.
What’s Going to Happen Now?
eMudhra assured that it will cooperate with the affected customers and the browsers in order to help transition smoothly. The company will give replacement certificates to the affected clients without charging them anything.
The company will provide service for certificate status and revocation till all issued certificates expire or get replaced. The company has started preparing a comprehensive report about the real cause of the incident.
How Did the Market Respond to the Incident?
The eMudhra shares lost about 20 percent on Thursday due to this security incident. Now investors will wait to see how the company’s strategy of withdrawal will affect their business.
What Is the SSL/TLS Certificate Business?
