India Post has widened the eligibility criteria for its Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) scheme.Under the revised framework, holding an operative savings account with either the Post Office Savings Bank or any scheduled commercial bank now serves as an additional route to qualify for the scheme.
Minister of State for Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar announced the update via a post on X. He confirmed that an active savings bank account with POSB or any scheduled bank has been added as an official eligibility criterion with immediate effect.
What is Rural Postal Life Insurance ?
The Rural Postal Life Insurance was formally launched on 24th March 1995 in pursuance of the decision of the government to accept the main recommendations of the Malhotra Committee to extend the coverage of traditional Postal Life Insurance to the rural areas. The main objective of RPLI is to provide financial protection to the rural population backed by the government with special focus on supporting the weaker sections of society and female workers and spreading the awareness of insurance in rural areas.
Main Changes in the Eligibility Criteria for RPLI
The main change is that having an active savings account in any scheduled bank has been made an eligibility criteria. Applicants can now leverage their existing banking relationships to establish eligibility under this modified framework.
“This step effectively removes the traditional rural-residence barriers, bringing affordable life insurance coverage closer to families, irrespective of geographical limitations,” said the minister.
Streamlined Paperless Verification Process
The process of verification has been simplified to remove paperwork and make enrolment seamless and citizen friendly. Applicants no longer need to obtain or submit physical bank certificates if valid digital proof is accessible.
To verify their savings account, applicants can submit any of the following accepted proofs:
– Core Banking Solution (CBS) status records
– Bank-issued email statements
– Screenshots from active mobile banking apps
– Printed ATM transaction statements
– Updated physical bank passbooks
Age Limits and Coverage Caps
The RPLI scheme continues to cater to individuals falling within the 18 to 43 years age bracket.Under the policy parameters, the maximum investment ceiling or sum assured limit is capped at ₹10 lakh. These standard investment parameters are not affected by the new savings account eligibility update.
Migrant workers’ smooth transition
This change of regulation is very convenient for the rural residents who move to urban areas for job or higher education.
The insureds who shift can easily carry on with their RPLI policies by paying recurring premiums from their existing savings bank account any of the scheduled banks and not allowing the insurance cover to lapse due to location change.
