Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella announced a major organizational change as the company doubles down on the AI platform shift. Nadella emphasized that the rise of artificial intelligence represents a “tectonic platform shift” that requires Microsoft to both manage its existing large-scale commercial business and build the future of AI simultaneously.
“History shows that general-purpose technologies like AI drive step changes in productivity and GDP growth,” Nadella said, adding that Microsoft has a unique opportunity to help customers and partners realize this promise by combining human capital with AI capabilities.
To accelerate this strategy, Judson Althoff has been named CEO of Microsoft’s commercial business. Over the past nine years, Althoff has led the global sales organization and built Microsoft Customer and Partner Solutions (MCAPS), which Nadella described as the company’s most important growth engine.
As part of the changes, Takeshi Numoto and his marketing team will join the new commercial business, reporting to Althoff as Chief Marketing Officer while continuing to work with Nadella on corporate brand and communications. Operations will also shift under Althoff’s leadership, strengthening the alignment between customer needs and delivery.
Nadella said the restructuring would enable engineering leaders and himself to focus on core technical priorities—datacenter buildout, systems architecture, AI science, and product innovation—while Althoff leads a new commercial leadership team uniting engineering, sales, marketing, operations, and finance.
“This isn’t just evolution, it’s reinvention, for each of us professionally and for Microsoft,” Nadella stressed.
