AI technology like ChatGPT and Grok is now integral to daily life in schools, businesses, and on the internet. For Gen Z, the newest generation in the workforce today, it presents new challenges and opportunities. These young workers are frequently expected to know and be proficient with AI technology. Unfortunately, many of them lack proper training or guidance. This causes anxiety and disorientation.

A large number of Gen Z workers are using AI at their jobs. They use it to write, do research, organize tasks, or analyze data. But many of them do not feel comfortable talking about it. They are afraid their coworkers or managers might judge them. Some even pretend to know more about AI than they actually do. This sense is increasingly referred to as “AI shame.” It is the anxiety that arises from leveraging AI but lacking confidence in it.

The first reason is that companies usually do not provide sufficient AI training. Senior employees, such as managers, tend to receive assistance more frequently. Entry-level employees, whose numbers include many Gen Zers, tend to get little or no assistance. They are left on their own to learn. This results in errors, frustration, and fear of falling behind.

Rather than making work simpler, AI often makes things more difficult for Gen Z. Many complain it creates more work for them rather than less. They feel the need to do more with less time. Some fear that if they fall behind, AI might even steal their jobs in the future.

Nevertheless, there are measures that can be taken to improve the situation. Gen Z can seek online classes or workshops to develop skills. Learning with peers or colleagues is also possible. Recording how AI is utilized in their work can indicate that they utilize it responsibly. Above all, it should be noted that AI is not a substitute for human thinking, ideas, or problem-solving.

Businesses also have a role to play. They must ensure they give adequate training and create an environment where learning is safe. With improved support, Gen Z will be more confident and utilize AI to develop in their careers rather than fearing it.
