Elon Musk, the founder and entrepreneur behind Tesla and SpaceX, is renowned for his pioneering innovations in technology and space travel. Yet, his professional and personal life have also been tainted by many feuds and breakups with some of the most prominent personalities. The feuds indicate how Musk’s aggressive, sometimes controversial approach to things has created tension with people around him, be they business partners, political personalities, or personal acquaintances.

Larry Page

Google co-founder Larry Page was once a close friend of Musk’s. The two collaborated and had much in common in their vision for the future of technology. Their friendship, though, came to an end in 2015 when xAI, Musk’s AI firm, brought on board Ilya Sutskever, an eminent AI researcher who worked at Google before. Page felt betrayed by this move, and the two had a bitter falling out. This conflict was not merely a dispute over one hiring decision but also over their differing opinions regarding AI development and the work of big tech entities. The feud between Musk and Page is a case in point of how Musk’s eagerness to challenge norms can ruin even long-term friendships.

Martin Eberhard

One of the co-founders of Tesla, Martin Eberhard, had a tumultuous relationship with Musk. In 2007, Musk took over as CEO of Tesla from Eberhard, leading to a public and legal conflict. Eberhard claimed that Musk had stolen credit for Tesla’s early achievements and sued for defamation. The suit was settled, but the ill feelings between the two never quite dissipated. This confrontation exposed Musk’s penchant for establishing dominance and remaking histories to his design even if it involved pushing aside past collaborators.

Sam Altman

Sam Altman, co-founder of OpenAI, had a falling out with Musk over the company’s direction. Musk wanted OpenAI to remain a non-profit, focused on benefiting humanity, while Altman pushed for a for-profit model to attract more funding. Their disagreement became personal, with Musk calling Altman “Scam Altman” and accusing him of moving away from OpenAI’s original mission. The break-up illustrated how conflicting views regarding the future of technology had the potential to create deep personal and professional divides.

Jack Dorsey

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey was a longtime supporter of Musk’s acquisition of the platform. But once Musk started making sweeping changes at Twitter, such as mass firing and a change in its content policies, Dorsey became disillusioned. He publicly criticized Musk, stating that Twitter had “gone south” under his rule. The tension between Dorsey and Musk is an example of how differences over a platform’s future can lead to contention, even among former collaborators.

Donald Trump

Musk and Donald Trump’s relationship suffered a dramatic twist in 2025. First, Musk had endorsed Trump’s presidential campaign and even joined his administration. But by mid-2025, the alliance disintegrated when Musk publicly denounced Trump’s political agenda, labeling a major spending bill “a disgusting abomination.” The confrontation revealed the tenuous nature of their political friendship as both men accused the other of seeking to use their alliance for profit. The rivalry between Musk and Trump was one of the most highly publicized instances of how even political friendships can dissolve.

Musk’s conflicts with Larry Page, Martin Eberhard, Sam Altman, Jack Dorsey, and Donald Trump demonstrate a common thread in his life: the price of ambition. Musk’s ambition to innovate and remake the future has consistently come at the expense of personal and professional repercussions, with a trail of fractured relationships. His success in technology and space travel cannot be disputed, yet these controversies illustrate the difficulties and dilemmas that accompany being one of the world’s most influential people.
