Pune, 24 May 2025

India’s defense exports reached an all-time high of Rs 23,622 crore (about $2.76 billion) in the 2024–25 financial year. This is a 12% increase from the previous year’s Rs 21,083 crore and a huge jump from Rs 686 crore in 2013–14. It shows India’s strong progress toward becoming self-reliant in defense production.

Private Sector Leads the Way
Private companies exported defense goods worth Rs 15,233 crore, while government-owned Defense Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) contributed Rs 8,389 crore—a 43% increase from last year.

Wider Global Reach
India sold defense equipment like weapons, ammunition, and components to around 80 countries, showing its growing role in the global defense market.

Reforms Driving Growth
Government policies have made it easier to get licenses, removed many restrictions, and simplified export rules. These changes have helped exports grow rapidly.

Future Goals
India aims to raise defense exports to Rs 30,000 crore in 2025–26 and Rs 50,000 crore by 2029, as part of its ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) mission.

Strategic Steps Forward

International Partnerships: India is working on defense deals with countries like the Philippines and Armenia, strengthening its global ties.

Technology Exports: India is developing and selling advanced weapons like the Bhargavastra anti-drone missile system.

Competitive Approach: By offering lower prices and better financing, India is trying to attract countries that usually buy weapons from other big exporters.

India’s rising defense exports not only help its economy but also boost its global influence, showing it is becoming a strong player in the international defense industry.
