The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has signed a significant agreement with the United States to construct the largest artificial intelligence (AI) campus in the world outside of the US. The agreement will make the UAE a major AI player and enable the country to have access to cutting-edge technology, including AI chips from firms like Nvidia, which had been unobtainable previously out of fear about China’s access to such technology.
The UAE has been pumping billions of dollars to enhance its position in the global market of AI. The new AI campus will be in Abu Dhabi, with a vast area, and will possess sufficient power to power AI data centers. This campus will host the most advanced AI technologies, including as many as 500,000 of Nvidia’s leading AI chips from 2025. This is a significant milestone in the continued development of the UAE’s AI capabilities.
The agreement was sealed during a trip by US President Donald Trump to Abu Dhabi. The pact contains security provisions to make sure that the sensitive technology is safeguarded. The UAE has promised to abide by US security regulations, and US firms will run the data centers within the UAE. The agreement ensures that the technology will not be diverted or fall into the hands of wrong parties, especially nations such as China.
G42, a government-backed company, will operate the AI campus in the UAE. But American firms such as Qualcomm and Amazon Web Services will offer critical services like cloud computing and cybersecurity. This is a policy change for the US, which is now comfortable working more closely with the UAE while preventing China from accessing sensitive technology.
This pact is illustrative of how the UAE has managed to strike a balance in its relations with both the US and China. While the UAE is strengthening its technology relationship with the US, it goes out of its way to ensure that it keeps its trade relationship with China intact as well. By opening doors to cutting-edge AI chips and technology, the UAE is emerging as an important actor in the international AI sector.
