Vaibhav Taneja, the CFO of Tesla, the renowned electric vehicle company promoted by Elon Musk, is an India-origin finance professional. He has been in the limelight of late after having raked up a whopping $139 million (approximately Rs 1,157 crores) in 2024. That places him among the world’s top-paid executives and beats Google’s Sundar Pichai and Microsoft’s Satya Nadella’s pay.

How did he earn so much?

Taneja’s basic pay at Tesla was $400,000 (approximately Rs 3.33 crore). However, he earned mainly through Tesla stock options and performance bonuses. Tesla’s share price was at $250 when he took his equity, enabling him to make a huge profit.

Google’s CEO Pichai earned approximately $10.73 million and Microsoft’s Nadella made $79.1 million, whereas Taneja’s overall earnings were significantly higher in 2024.

His early life and career:

Vaibhav Taneja is 47 years old. He is an alumnus of the University of Delhi and is a Chartered Accountant by qualification. He began his career in PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and worked for 17 years in India and the United States.

He joined SolarCity Corporation in 2016, which was subsequently acquired by Tesla. He began at Tesla as Assistant Corporate Controller. Gradually, he climbed the corporate ladder and became Tesla’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

His position at Tesla India:

Taneja also has a significant contribution to Tesla’s strategy in India. He is the director of Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Limited, which is the company attempting to bring Tesla vehicles to India.

Though Tesla is having some issues in America, its senior executives are doing great. Vaibhav Taneja’s success from being an Indian Chartered Accountant to one of the world’s highest-paid executives is something motivational. His talent, intelligent choices, and performance at Tesla have made him a top leader in Silicon Valley.
