After three consecutive quarters of headcount contraction, Tata Consultancy Services showed an uptick in its total employee base in the first quarter of FY25.
For the quarter ended June, TCS’ headcount grew by 5,452 employees to 606,998. Its attrition also fell further to 12.1%, down by 40 basis points from the previous quarter.
“We have onboarded around 11,000 freshers this quarter. I can’t give an exact number but it should be around 40,000 like the previous years,” Milind Lakkad, Chief HR Officer of TCS said.
He also said that the company has just concluded the National Qualifier Test and many candidates have successfully qualified, after which interviews would be conducted.
In FY24, TCS reported a headcount of 615,318, which came down to 608,985 in Q2. It came down further to 603,305 people in Q3. In the last quarter, the total employee count stood at 601,546.
According to the company management, the attrition rate is likely to stabilise at this level in the coming quarters.
With regard to the work-from-office policy of TCS recently, Lakkad said that employees were penalised monetarily for not adhering to the policy of working from the office five days a week. He, however, didn’t divulge the details.
“There are implications for people not coming to office. We do not give out the amounts of what that impact would be. It is something we are doing more from basically bringing in the discipline standpoint and not for any other reasons,” he added.
According to the company, around 70% or more percentage of employees are currently working from offices and this number is rising. “I’m also not worried about that. In fact, people have realised the value of coming to the office, some of them have come to the office for the first time because they joined TCS during the pandemic. All of that is basically creating positive energy in the system,” Lakkad said during the press conference.
