Tata Trusts has agreed to renew the term of N Chandrasekaran as Chairman of Tata Sons for a further five years. The trustees of both the primary holding trusts, Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, took this unanimous decision as they debated how to maintain Tata Sons as a private company and initiate negotiations with the Shapoorji Pallonji Group on an exit strategy. This is a follow-up to a similar appointment in 2022, where he was also accorded a five-year term as Tata Sons Chairman.
Who is N Chandrasekaran?
N Chandrasekaran has been associated with the Tata Group for a very long time. He graduated from Trichy’s Regional Engineering College and joined Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in 1987 as a graduate trainee. Over 20 years, he progressed through ranks to being CEO in 2009.
Chandrasekaran served as CEO and MD of TCS for eight years, until 2017, when he was elevated to the chairmanship of Tata Sons. During his tenure as CEO and MD, TCS recorded $16.5 billion in revenues for 2015-16 and became India’s largest private-sector employer as well as the most valuable company in the country.
He also served on the board of the Reserve Bank of India from 2016 to 2022.
Chandrasekaran assumed charge at Tata Sons at a time of leadership crises and trust erosion, after Cyrus Mistry was ousted. He not only stabilized the company during that time but also recorded major triumphs, such as the Tatas acquiring Air India and clinching the Supreme Court case against Mistry.
Last year, he introduced Tata Neu, a super app with multiple services such as airlines, hotels, medicines, and groceries, along with ‘super rewards.’
N Chandrasekaran’s Salary
Chandrasekaran’s salary grew 19% in 2022 because of a massive 164% rise in the profits of Tata Sons. His compensation for the year ended March 31, 2022, grew to Rs 109 crore, becoming one of the highest-paid executives in India.
Chandrasekaran is a keen photographer and marathon long-distance runner. He resides in Mumbai with his wife, Lalitha, and his son, Pranav, who is still studying for his undergraduate degree.
