SoftBank Group and OpenAI have launched a gigantic $500 billion project called “The Stargate Project” that will create high-end AI infrastructure across the United States. Masayoshi Son, the CEO of SoftBank, will head this project as chairman, which will be implemented in the next four years.
It begins with an instant investment of $100 billion, bringing together some major players in the tech world. SoftBank will take care of the financial part of the deal, while OpenAI will manage operations. Oracle and MGX are also equity funders, thus adding strength to the partnership.
Some of the main technology partners to be involved are Microsoft, Nvidia, Arm, and Oracle. Work has begun at the location in Texas, and others are scheduled across the U.S. OpenAI will take deeper collaboration with Microsoft by significantly leveraging Azure cloud computing. The companies have collaborated with OpenAI since 2016, and one of them is Nvidia, whose advanced computing resources will also help in providing cutting-edge power in the AI ecosystem.
The project, OpenAI said, would help accelerate U.S. leadership in AI and create hundreds of thousands of jobs. The funding will further enable continued research on AGI, provide the necessary computing resources, and allow for training leading-edge AI models.
“This investment will re-industrialize America and give OpenAI the computing power it needs for AGI research,” said OpenAI in a statement.
The Stargate Project has received support from technology leaders and national security officials, and it has been considered as a project that would keep the U.S. competitive in AI development. OpenAI stated that its mission is to use AI for the benefit of humanity and believes this project is a step forward.
With this massive infrastructure effort, OpenAI hopes to empower creative minds to explore how AI can enhance humanity’s future.
