Microsoft announced in an official statement that it will no longer support Windows 10 after 14 October 2025. This signifies the end of updates and fixes for the operating system. There are still millions of users of Windows 10 in India, and they will have a choice: either upgrade to Windows 11 or pay additional for security support.
The timing is sensible, experts say. Most of the laptops and PCs purchased during the pandemic are nearing age, so humans were anyway in need of upgrades anyway. Nevertheless, the shift will impact household users, small firms, and large businesses differently.
Why You Need to Upgrade
When Microsoft ceases updates, Windows 10 machines will no longer receive security patches, new features, or official support. That renders them more vulnerable to viruses and hackers. Industries such as banks, hospitals, and government offices cannot afford to take that risk, so they need to upgrade to Windows 11 or have to pay for special security support.
Based on Ranjit Atwal of Gartner, the transition might even increase India’s PC market by 11% by 2025, as individuals will purchase new systems.
Cost of Extended Security Updates
Not everyone is able to switch in a hurry. For those customers, Microsoft will charge extra for Extended Security Updates (ESUs). But they cost a lot – over $60 (₹5,300+) per device, annually. For large businesses with hundreds of computers, this might be an enormous additional expense.
What Will Still Work on Windows 10
Even after October 2025, some Microsoft services will persist for some time:
- Microsoft 365 apps (Word, Excel, Outlook): Security updates through October 2028, feature updates through August 2026.
- Microsoft Defender Antivirus: Will continue to receive critical security updates.
This provides companies with additional time for planning, but it’s not a long-term solution.
PC Makers Already Prepared
Computer makers say the move shouldn’t come as a surprise. The vast majority of new PCs are already built for Windows 11, and companies are assisting buyers with the transition.
For everyday users, it will probably translate into purchasing a new PC or laptop ahead of schedule. For enterprises, the dilemma will be whether to pay for upgrades, purchase new systems, or take their chances with running unsupported old machines.
