Bengaluru, 9 January 2025

Microsoft is planning to layoff 1% of its workforce in 2025 on the basis of performance parameters. According to reports, this performance appraisal will affect several divisions, including its security unit.

A report by CNBC said citing company sources that this decision aligns with the company’s efforts to strengthen its performance management approach.

“At Microsoft, we focus on high-performance talent. We’re always working on helping people learn and grow. When people are not performing, we take appropriate action,” the spokesperson said as mentioned in the report.

Technology giants had laid off thousands of workers in the post pandemic period and Microsoft is no exception. Microsoft cut an estimated 10,000 jobs in 2023, amounting to roughly 5% of its global workforce.

In 2024, Microsoft laid off around 2,000 employees in its gaming division following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Towards the end of the year, the company cut 1,500 roles in its Azure cloud computing business with a job loss of about 1,000 workers.

With the advent of generative AI, technology giants are bringing in efficiency by deploying technology solutions. Section of analysts believe that many job roles are becoming redundant owing to such deployment.
