India has emerged as the fastest-growing developer community on GitHub with 21.9 million users, overtaking the United States as the biggest pool of open-source contributors. This is an increase from 18 million developers in April 2025. India now ranks the world’s largest contributor in public and open-source contributions, testament to its expanding base of developers and its heightened participation in open-source software (OSS).
This year alone, India saw an addition of over five million new developers, representing more than 14% of the new accounts on GitHub. In 2030, India will contribute one out of every three new GitHub developers, with an estimated 57.5 million developers by then. The United States will come in second, followed by Brazil, Japan, and the United Kingdom.
GitHub also announced that it has launched Agent HQ, an open platform where AI applications developed by firms such as OpenAI, Google, and xAI can integrate with one another on GitHub. AI-based tools will be accessible to developers via GitHub’s paid Copilot offering. AI integration into software development is enabling developers to get their work done quicker and more effectively.
Along with the increase in AI adoption, GitHub also pointed towards a change in programming language trends. TypeScript surpassed Python as the top programming language, while developers have been moving more towards typed languages that enhance coding with AI tools.
Since its acquisition by Microsoft in 2018, GitHub has centered on embracing AI across all aspects of development. Applications such as Copilot, for code completion, and Copilot Chat, for AI-driven coding assistance, have become fundamental for developers.
Going forward, GitHub plans to reach 1 billion developers in 2030. With the increasing number of developers in India and with the ongoing usage of AI tools, GitHub is poised to define the future of software development.
