Igor Babuschkin, a co-founder of Elon Musk’s AI company xAI, has revealed that he is quitting the firm. He made the announcement on social media, declaring Wednesday his final day at xAI. Babuschkin said that he is launching a new venture called Babuschkin Ventures, which will be investing in AI safety research and AI technology improvement startups.

Babuschkin has a solid background in the field of AI. Prior to starting xAI, he worked for prominent firms such as Google’s DeepMind and OpenAI, two of the largest in AI development. With xAI, he was heavily involved in developing the tools and systems necessary to start and maintain the company’s AI projects. He was also tasked with running much of the company’s infrastructure and AI activities.

xAI was founded in 2023 by Elon Musk to rival other large tech firms, such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. Musk founded xAI with an ambition to compete with such firms over matters such as too much censorship, as well as inadequate safety practices in AI. Babuschkin’s resignation from xAI comes after the recent exit by Robert Keele, the firm’s head of law. The changes at xAI come at a time when there is growing competition in the AI industry, with major companies racing to develop more advanced AI systems.

Babuschkin’s move to step down from xAI and concentrate on AI safety follows the field when the industry is facing growing pressure for its surge and the possible threats it may lead to. Most experts say AI technology requires greater focus on safety and ethics to guarantee it’s responsibly employed.

Babuschkin’s new company, Babuschkin Ventures, will focus on promoting AI safety research and assisting in financing firms that are working to create AI that is safer and more ethical. Babuschkin’s leaving is one part of a larger wave of executive departures at Musk’s firms. For instance, Linda Yaccarino, CEO of Musk’s X firm, recently left just a month after the platform’s merger with xAI.

Babuschkin’s jump brings into focus the increased prominence of AI safety, as well as the high stakes in the industry. The industry of AI is rapidly changing, and most people think that players like xAI will have a significant influence on the future of technology.
