Steel production globally increased only marginally by 0.3% to 145.3 million tonnes in August 2025 compared with the 144.8 million tonnes a year ago, according to data released by the World Steel Association.
China led the show with 77.4 million tonnes of production though it was down 0.7% at 77.4 million tonnes. India was the second largest producer, which produced 14.1 million tonnes of steel—an increase of 13.2% from the year-ago period.
Steel output of the US was up by 3.2% to 7.2 million tonnes, while Japan recorded a 3.4% decline in its steel production to 6.6 million tonne.
Russia, the fifth largest steel producer in the world saw a 4.6% decline to 5.5 million tonne in August. South Korea also witnessed a fall of 6.1% in its steel output to 5.2 million tonne. Türkiye’s steel output went up by 7.9% to 3.4 million tonne and, and Germany’s production went up 10.5 per cent to 2.6 million tonne. The steel production in Brazil recorded a dip of 4.6% to 2.9 million tonne.
Asia and Oceania produced 107.7 million of steel, up by 0.4% over the same period of last year.
