OpenAI has partnered with the defense startup-Anduril to enhance technology, helping the US military deal with the menace of drones.
OpenAI’s advanced models in artificial intelligence will be part of systems used to track and measure unmanned aircraft.
Anduril, a firm developing anti-drone software, will make use of OpenAI’s technology to make the anti-drone software more accurate and faster. This will minimize mistakes and harm to bystanders in operations related to drones.
The companies, however, confirmed that OpenAI’s AI will be used only in Anduril’s drone systems and not in other weapons technology.
This is part of an increasing trend where large tech firms are collaborating more closely with the defense industry. OpenAI had previously barred the use of its AI for military purposes but relaxed this policy in January. Since, it has cooperated with the Pentagon on cybersecurity and other projects.
The company also brings defense experts into its leadership team, such as Sasha Baker, former Defense Department official, and Paul Nakasone, top cybersecurity leader who serves on its board, in order to increase their focus on supporting national security efforts.
