Indian defense shares are likely to continue being in focus following the government’s approval for military acquisition proposals valued at ₹2.12 lakh crore. The decision came on Monday, October 26, when the country is looking to enhance its military force with new weaponry, vehicles, aircrafts, drones, and surveillance equipment.
These military acquisition proposals were made by the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC), the government’s primary agency tasked with making defense acquisitions. The DAC meeting was led by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.
The proposals include many military equipment needs for the Army, Air Force, and Navy. As much as 82% of the total acquisitions will be sourced locally, which may provide an opportunity for Indian defense manufacturers.
What Has the Government Approved?
The Indian Army has received approval for military acquisitions such as high-mobility vehicles, artillery systems, light multi-role helicopters, air defense systems, and anti-drone technology.
The high-mobility vehicles are intended to facilitate movement of troops and equipment in rough terrain. The new artillery systems will enhance the firepower of the Indian Army.
Government has also approved technologies that would be able to detect the sound of gunfire as well as help the soldiers know the situation around them at any point of time.
There are also plans for surveillance drones, long-distance kamikaze drones and drone identification and counter measure systems among the technologies mentioned.
Defence Stocks in Focus
Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL)
HAL could come into the focus due to its involvement in manufacturing light multi-role helicopters for the Army and Air Force. However, it cannot be said for sure yet whether HAL would be chosen as a supplier for these purchases.
Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL)
BEL may get benefited due to increased demand for defence electronics and radar surveillance systems. The recent proposals include air defence, anti-drone and surveillance systems. BEL has recently won another order for ₹770 crore for enhanced low level lightweight radars for the Army.
Larsen & Toubro (L&T)
L&T could remain in focus due to the procurement of self-propelled artillery systems. It is connected with the production of K9 Vajra-T artillery gun systems in India. However, it would be decided later who gets the orders.
BEML Ltd
This company could become attractive for investors since the Army is planning to purchase high-mobility vehicles. This company produces special vehicles for defence and other industries. No supplier has been selected for this proposal yet.
Zen Technologies
This firm specializes in the production of anti-drone technologies and training technologies in defence sphere. Purchase of the proposed anti-drone systems could make it relevant but there is no order yet.
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd and Cochin Shipyard
Both companies could be considered as the most attractive ones for further purchase considering the modernisation process in the Navy. However, it is still unclear whether both firms will get any orders from the government.
What does it Mean?
The Approval of Necessity (AoN) by the Defence Acquisition Council means the preliminary approval of the beginning of the procurement process. It does not necessarily mean that the order has already been made.
The total sum of ₹2.12 lakh crore relates to different defence purchases. The order sums for the particular companies have not been announced by the government yet.
Defence Stocks See Upside in Early Trades
On October 27, 2026, defence stocks gained on the back of the development.
The Nifty India Defence index was seen up by about 2.5% from its previous close at around 10 AM. The gainers included companies such as Data Patterns, Apollo Micro Systems, Paras Defence, Hindustan Aeronautics, and Bharat Electronics.
The planned purchase of defence equipment may be seen as an opportunity for Indian manufacturers. But investors would have to wait for confirmation of the orders from individual companies.
