Kochi, 13 August 2026

The stock price of Jio Financial Services (JFSL) increased by almost 2.87% to ₹263.40 at NSE on Thursday, August 13, following a big investment by Bank of America (BofA) in Jio Credit, which is the lending division of Jio Financial Services.

Under this investment, Bank of America will make an investment of ₹18,268 crore or around $1.9 billion to acquire 49.9% stake in Jio Credit. This would be done by buying fresh equity and warrant shares. At first, the stake of BofA will be 26.5% on account of ₹6,613 crore of investment. Subsequently, BofA will take up subscription for ₹11,655 crore worth of warrants. When these warrants get converted into shares, then BofA’s stake will become 49.9%.

This investment will lead to the creation of a joint venture between JFSL and BofA. Under this joint venture, Jio’s vast digital ecosystem and knowledge of the Indian market will be combined with BofA’s global expertise in the banking and finance sector.

Jio Credit is an entity that has been in operation for not more than two years. The firm offers loans to retail and SMB clients. Some of the products offered by Jio Credit are home loans, loans against securities, commercial and supply chain finance. At June 30, 2026, Jio Credit had total Assets Under Management (AUM) of ₹30,667 crore.

As far as performance goes, the firm has shown a very rapid growth rate where its assets under management have gone up by 2.6x year-on-year. Jio Credit also recorded loans disbursed worth ₹11,252 crore in the June quarter.

From the perspective of the shareholders of JFSL, the transaction involves a trade-off between upside and downside. On one hand, JFSL will be giving up a certain portion of the earnings potential of Jio Credit, but on the other, JFSL will get a large amount of fresh capital inflow.

This joint venture may also boost competition in the Indian NBFC industry, as Jio has access to its huge customer base along with the digital reach, and BofA has global financial expertise.

Nevertheless, fast growth is always accompanied by certain risks, and it will be necessary for Jio Credit to ensure that it has high-quality lending practices, handle the defaults in a proper manner, and ensure that loan growth translates into high profitability.

All in all, this joint venture will be crucial for Jio Financial Services. The real effectiveness of this venture will not only depend on the pace of growth of Jio Credit, but also on loan quality and profitability.
