Adani Group’s stocks are in focus following a US court ruling which threw out the criminal charges leveled against Adani Group’s chairman Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani.
These charges had been in court proceedings for nearly two years and were finally thrown out by the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York, “with prejudice.”
To explain briefly, it means the case has been dismissed permanently and the charges cannot be refiled in that case.
The charges were related to the allegation of securities fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy. The case started in November 2024 when US prosecutors charged Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani, former Adani Green Energy CEO Vneet Jaain and other individuals with conspiring to bribe Indian government officials with $250 million.
According to the prosecutors, the payments made were related to solar power agreements that were expected to yield more than $2 billion in revenues in the next 20 years. Also, according to the prosecutors, there were false statements made regarding investors while the Adani Group obtained more than $3 billion in loans and bonds in the United States.
However, the Adani Group vehemently denied the accusations against them. The group maintained that the accusations were totally baseless and that their firms had always complied with all the rules and regulations.
There was also a civil case brought by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This particular case has now been settled as the final judgment in the matter has been made against Gautam Adani. As per the agreement, Adani did not admit the allegations, but he paid a $6 million civil penalty to SEC within 30 days.
The US District Senior Judge Nicholas George Garaufis accepted the dismissal of the criminal case. The Judge also added that he was satisfied that the previous commitment of Adani to invest $10 billion in the US had no bearing on the decision of the Justice Department to drop the charges.
Gautam Adani expressed happiness with the court’s ruling. He added that his group believed in truth and justice throughout the tough times.
