Following the online reports that suggest a breach of data leakage from the bank, Bank of Baroda has initiated a forensic investigation into the matter. In response, the state-owned lender has assured that it is cooperating with the concerned authorities and meeting all of the regulations to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. In addition, the bank has assured that it will continue to ensure the safety of customer information.
The problem emerged when some users of the online platform X posted their claim that the bank has faced a massive data leak from its databases. As per the claim, nearly one terabyte of data that contains the details of the bank’s customers’ Aadhaar number was leaked without authorization. Shortly after these online claims were made, it was reported by cybersecurity websites that the data set related to the claims has surfaced online.
In order to inform the insurers about the breach, Bank of Baroda has already made a notification of loss to its insurers. According to a report published by The Economic Times, the bank has submitted a notice of loss to its cyber insurers.
The cyber insurance scheme at the bank is run by National Insurance Company and covers an aggregate sum of around ₹750 crore. But the maximum claim which can be made for a single loss is about ₹300 crore, sources say.
An annual premium of ₹6 crore is paid by Bank of Baroda for the cyber insurance scheme it is covered under. It is backed by several insurance companies and reinsurance companies in the country. National Insurance Company acts as the lead insurer for the scheme.
The forensic report is expected to uncover the extent of the data breach and how it happened. The bank says it is working closely with the authorities and ensuring protection of customer interests in the meanwhile.
