Kochi, 6 July 2026

Shares in defence firms rose sharply on Monday following government approval of defence procurement worth Rs 52,000 crore in India. The sanction was issued by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), which is the highest authority for defence acquisitions in the nation.

A number of new defence acquisitions have received Approval of Necessity (AoN). AoN is the first formal authorization to prove the necessity of a certain type of weaponry or machinery by the armed forces. AoN is not an indication of purchase, as the tendering, testing, and contracting phase would follow subsequently.

After the news, several defence stocks rose sharply. BEL stock saw a rise of more than 2% whereas BDL witnessed an increase of nearly 3%. HAL and Solar Industries India also witnessed a rise in their stock.

The list of cleared projects consists of several advanced military systems that will be used to enhance the Indian military capability. It consists of anti-drone systems, anti-tank guided missiles, surface-to-air missile systems, high-altitude surveillance system, kamikaze drones, and naval unmanned aerial systems.

One of the key areas in which new systems are supposed to enhance military capability is air defence. The new projects will assist the Indian Army in detecting and eliminating enemy aircraft, helicopters, drones, and missiles. Anti-tank guided missiles will help increase the capability of the Indian Army to destroy enemy tanks, while active protection systems will allow protecting Indian tanks from any attack.

Moreover, the government also approved several new projects for the Indian Navy. They consist of naval drones, advanced sea mines, and Land-Based Testing Facility.

There are many defence companies that can gain from government contracts in the future, including Bharat Electronics, Bharat Dynamics, Hindustan Aeronautics, Paras Defence & Space Technologies, Data Patterns, Zen Technologies, ideaForge Technology, Solar Industries India, Astra Microwave Products, and MTAR Technologies.

The reason is because each of these firms has knowledge and specialization in defence electronics, missiles, drones, surveillance systems, radar technology, explosives and aerospace equipment. Because of the approved projects’ matching with these firms’ scope of business, it can be assumed that these firms can receive further orders from the government.

However, the fact that there are many approved projects does not automatically mean that these firms will gain from them soon. Further steps need to be taken after the project approval, which includes bidding and negotiation.

To sum up, the recently approved projects can both improve India’s defences and help its defence industry to earn money.
